What better way to kill time waiting for a delayed long haul flight from Western Australia to London than by writing a killer new track. (Have I overused “kill” yet?)
Stuck with a melody he couldn’t shake – and the lyrics forming whilst he waited – composer John Young found he had the song fully written by the time he eventually reached London.
When the opening line, “I was never the girl for you” popped into songwriter John’s head, he couldn’t let it go. Upon arriving in the UK, he knew he needed to find the right singer and pianist for the track.
Enter pianist, David Bennett and the incredible singer, Laura Mitchell.
Once the musical cavalry arrived and rehearsed, David nailed the bluesy-jazz feel on the piano and singer Laura added the powerful and emotional vocals.
The result is Killing Time, a track transcending age and genre. On a first listen, you could easily mistake this song as either from the 60s or from today. It has a timeless quality: “an achingly beautiful track which is equal parts Ray Charles and Adele.”
Laura said she immediately connected with the song and using her wedding singer experience, adapted John’s lyrics to her own style.
“I didn’t see this coming or work towards it. I am in a wedding band. At weddings, many people ask, “Do you perform you own stuff?” or “You should go on X Factor” I didn’t have plans for that. I used to write music in my teens but worked off most of that angst and sadly stopped writing music when I started learning about it at Uni. I suffered from stage fright for a long time, but through the wedding band, the ability to put on the dress and heels and become a rock star – singing other people’s songs, I become someone else. It’s nice for me to become vulnerable again with a chance to show off the softer side of my vocals”.
